Redtooth won an award for the Best Entertainment Business 2012 at the pub industry Oscars this week, beating stiff competition from the global entertainment giant, Sky TV.

The Publican Awards were held at The Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London at a glittering pub industry event on Tuesday evening hosted by the comedian Jimmy Carr and the industry trade magazine, the Morning Advertiser.

Voted for by licensees and pub operating companies, Redtooth scored highly for its weekly pub quizzes and pub poker tournament for driving customers into pubs and increasing their business profitability.

Redtooth, based in Barlborough, Derbyshire employs 20 employees and has been running pub quizzes since 1998 and the national UK Pub Poker tournament since 2007 and has attracted a huge following from thousands of pubs from the Orkneys to Penzance.

Managing Director for Redtooth, Martin Green commented: “This award has blown us all away and I want to thank the entire Redtooth team for all their hard work.

“The whole ethos of our business is about driving people into pubs for a great night out: I have been creating quizzes for over 20 years and at Redtooth we know what makes a great pub quiz work. We applied the same understanding to our live pub poker business and it’s been a huge hit for licensees and their customers. We keep things simple for the operator and we keep customers in the pub for the evening.  As the world’s largest live poker tournament, we are always looking at enhancing the experience for our customers and at the end of the 2012 poker season, we will be flying out 100 people to Las Vegas for our National Final.

“There’s been a lot of talk about food being the big focus for pubs but operators mustn’t overlook the fact that people also go to pubs to be entertained. We’re offering a cost effective solution to those quiet week nights.”

Redtooth pub quizzes cost from £2 per week and Live Pub Poker costs £20 per week and includes cards, chips, table tops and a full marketing and promotion kit.

On Sunday 25th March 2012 nine pub poker players in the Redtooth UK Pub Poker national final earned themselves a trip to Las Vegas in May to compete for the title of UK Pub Poker Champion 2012 and a share in £12,000 prize pot.

Almost 400 players travelled from all corners of the UK to one of Europe’s largest poker venues, Dusk Till Dawn, in Nottingham with glamour model and TOWIE star, Lauren Pope and TV quiz professional Mark Labbett on hand to add some star quality to the proceedings.

In a nail-biting finish, Craig Evans from Chase Town in Staffordshire was the unluckiest man at the tournament finishing on the bubble and just missing out on a place in Vegas. After playing around 200 hands of poker during the day, the final nine players were Richard Arnott from Fife, Richard Breakwell from Wolverhampton, Paul Broughton from Leicester, Dean Dunkerley from Sheffield, Andree Gee from Huddersfield, Nigel Hardy from Ilkeston, Richard Hoodless from Stapleford, Neil Pitchford from Thetford and Andy Seymour from Weymouth.

All nine have won a 7-night stay for themselves and a guest at The Orleans Casino in Las Vegas from 9^th May. On arrival they will play a welcome tournament to compete for tickets to shows and trips around the city and will be free to enjoy Las Vegas at their leisure. The final table will take place on 13^th May where they will each start with exactly the same amount of chips they finished with in Nottingham to compete for the title of UK Pub Poker Champion. In addition to the trip to Vegas, first place will pick up £5,000 with second and third places winning £2,000 and £1,000 respectively.

Martin Green, Director for Redtooth commented: “This is the fifth year of our annual pub poker tournament and it’s the first time we’ve taken the final table to Vegas. It’s incredible to think that playing poker in your local pub can earn you a place at one of the most exciting cities in the world!”

Each of the players had earned their place at the Grand Final through one of 68 regional finals played throughout the 2011/12 season.

A pub quiz team from the Mason’s Arms in Mickleover walked away with £1,000 and VIP tickets for Derby County last night at the Pedigree Pub Quiz Grand Final held at Pride Park. The quizzes for the pub competition each week and the final were produced and hosted by Redtooth.

Ten teams of four made it to the grand final of the quiz competition following the qualifying rounds held in pubs serving Marston’s Pedigree in and around Derby during January.

The Mason’s Arms Olympic Hide and Seek team play in the pub’s regular Sunday night quiz and are regular winners so it was no surprise that they made it through to the final of the Pedigree Pub Quiz competition.

Richard Burtenshaw from the team admitted that the last few rounds had been tense and didn’t think they would win.

He said: “It was a real mix of questions and some of them were very tough in the last round. We thought we’d blown it so we’re really chuffed to win such a great prize.”

In addition to the £1,000 prize the four team members will be able to see Derby County play Peterborough United in the last match if the season on 28^th April in full VIP luxury, courtesy of football club sponsors, Marston’s Pedigree.

Coming second in the quiz was the Grim Reaper team from the Jonty Farmer on Kedleston Road winning a selection of Marston’s merchandise. Third was the aptly named team from the Miners Arms in Church Gresley, the Pedigree Chums, each winning a case of Marston’s Pedigree.

Kirsty Rodgers, Assistant Brand Manager for Marston’s Pedigree commented: “People love to test their general knowledge in pub quizzes and they are a great way to see friends, enjoy a night off from the telly and to support your local pub. Of course, it goes without saying that any pub serving Marston’s Pedigree will be a great pub too!”

There’s some changes to the way we are running our  finals in this new season (Year 6) which starts on Feb 5th 2012.  These are some of the exciting ways in which Redtooth Poker continues to be the biggest and best pub poker league!

The VEGAS100 Showgirls!

Here’s more detailed information on the changes and how they affect the finals.

THE PUB

The games in your pub will stay the same but there will be a fourth player going to regional finals if your pub meets one of these criteria.

● The Pub has played in the Redtooth Poker league for three consecutive years = A fourth player to the regional finals.

● The Pub has 20 players who have played for at least four weeks each in the current season = A fourth player to the regional finals.

● This information will be calculated by our website automatically.

REGIONAL FINALS

Regional Finals stay the same but the great news is that the winner goes straight through to our VEGAS 100 National Final Event!

● The 1st place winner at each regional final will qualify for the VEGAS 100 National Final Event as well as receiving a Crystal trophy. The usual cash prizes are still in place for positions 2 to 8.

● All other qualifying seats at the regional’s (varies by size) will be invited to take part in the Last Table Las Vegas Semi Final tournaments to be held twice per year after the end of seasons 2 and 4.

LAST TABLE LAS VEGAS SEMI FINALS

● These are new events to be held after the end of Seasons 2 and 4.

● The Semi Finals are 200 seat tournaments and ten seats from each final will qualify for the VEGAS 100 National Final Event. There will be further prizes for positions 11-20.

● These will be professionally hosted by Redtooth and feature some of the guests and extras usually found at our recent National Finals.

ONLINE TOURNAMENTS

● The Redtooth Tavern online will continue as normal.

● We will also be introducing some new monthly tournaments that will be open to all registered pub league players and will offer seats into the VEGAS 100 National Final Event.

THE VEGAS 100

● The VEGAS 100 National Final Event will take place in Las Vegas, USA in May 2013. Dates will be confirmed by Sep 2012.

● There will be 100 players invited to take part from the 2012/13 Redtooth Poker year.

● The prize includes flights, accommodation, transfers and the tournament entry.

● Each prize is for one person only. Guest tickets will be available to purchase separately.

● Under 21 – Unfortunately you won’t be able to play in Las Vegas. If you win a seat then you will receive £850 cash instead.

● Entry into the Redtooth Poker regional finals is taken as acceptance of these terms and conditions.

One of the players, Alan Powell, was someone to watch out for as he’d won the tournament for the previous two years! He and seven other players made the final table in what was a cracking finale to the Bateman’s poker final.

The final table consisted of Dominic Holliday, Alan Powell, Dan Lee, Glen Drummond,Eddie Cummings, Dave Cridland, Tim Pexton and Julian Thompson.

The first player to leave us in 8th place after 20 minutes of play was Dominic Holliday. Dominic was followed in 7th place by our two time champion Alan Powell before Dan Lee finished in 6th, Glen Drummond 5th, Eddie Cummings 4th and Dave Cridland 3rd for £50.

This brought us to our heads-up encounter between Tim Pexton and Julian Thompson for the chance to be Bateman’s newest poker champion and £200 better off.

The heads-up match lasted 25 minutes until Julian Thompson wrapped things up when his 10-4 flopped top pair on a 2-7-10 flop. A turn and river of 8-J didn’t improve Tim’s K-Q as Julian Thompson won the 2011 Bateman’s Poker Final.

As part of the Punch National Quiz Competition prize, Team Ole from the Highwood in Solihull won £2,000 and also the chance to take on a celebrity quiz team in their own local – The Highwood in Solihull.

So, on Nov 10th Redtooth packed the van and headed off to Solihull with an amazing celebrity line up to tackle the winning Team Ole.and the chance to take on a celebrity quiz team at their local.

With Ted Robbins as the host once again the competition took the form of multiple rounds and individual rounds. Each player took a turn in the hotseat and each team also had to be hot on the buzzers for the last round.

In the end it was a very tight competition – the locals scored an impressive 70 points but the Celebs sneaked ahead with a score of 73.

At one point in the final round, which was a quick fire buzzer round, Team Ole sneaked ahead in the points but in the end a fast and furious flurry of correct answers from the Celebs took it.

In our MegaMind challenge there was a tie at the end of the quiz between Matt Ward and Pat Gibson. Both players scored 8 points, but in the tie break questions, Pat scored 4 to Matt’s 3 and so became the winner.

 

The night was a great success both for the Highwood Pub and the teams involved. Sign ups are currently being taken for the 2012 National Quiz Competition which is open to all Punch partners.

In the evening of November 10th 2011 Redtooth attended the Club Mirror Awards ceremony at the Palace Hotel in Manchester to present the trophy for the Redtooth sponsored category ‘Poker Club Of The Year’!

The awards ceremony recognizes the leading clubs in the UK in their specialized field and who better to sponsor and present the Poker Club Of The Year award than the UK’s No.1 pub poker company, Redtooth Poker. The award on the night was presented by Redtooth’s Poker Manager, Caroline Drury and was won by Dorset’s Mudeford & District Mens Club.

The Mudeford & District’s poker league has gone from strength to strength this past year with them finishing season 5.3 with 104 unique players playing at various points during the season and already in season 5.4 have had 76 unique players after only 2 weeks. They are certainly a worthy winner of the award.

Club Mirror Awards 2011

Clubs across Britain have been celebrated for the pivotal role they play in the community, and for their ability to provide a safe and convivial environment in which to socialise. From over 600 entries, finalists were singled out for excellence across 26 categories.

Club Mirror magazine, owner and organiser of the awards, has been an integral part of the club industry for over 40 years. The Awards are now in their 19th year and this year were presented by sports personality John Inverdale.

Head of Judges Caroline Scoular, said: “Against a backdrop of cheap supermarket drink, local pub closures and harsh trading conditions, clubs across the country have worked incredibly hard this year to constantly improve and provide a great offer for members. And they’re succeeding.

“ Many are key in championing their own grass roots sports activities, encouraging members young and old to participate in sports and fitness. Others have focused on building their entertainment programmes , enhancing their catering operations, refurbishing the clubhouse and facilities and keeping drink at sensible prices despite rising costs. We also honoured clubs for the hundreds of thousands of pounds they raise for charity across the year.

“We’ve bought in new awards this year to honour the commitment to sport and the crucial role that clubs play in encouraging the UK onto the pitches and out of their arm chairs. We’ve also incorporated more traditional activities which are seeing a huge resurgence in popularity. “

Publisher and Managing Director Sean Ferris said:

“ Now, more than ever, clubs are proving to be at the heart of the community and we’re proud to have been working with them to secure this position for the past 43 years. Next year? Our determination – and theirs – will be even stronger. Redtooth also provided the entertainment after the awards by supplying casino table for the guests to play on throughout he evening.

Due to the growing number of Welsh members our Wales regional final will now be split into two, just as our London, North West and West Midlands finals currently are. This takes our regional final count to an astonishing 17!

Wales is now a big part of Redtooth Poker, ever since Wales Poker League joined the family with exciting new Welsh venues joining every season.
